In 2003, Eunice Kathleen Waymon took her last breath. She died in her home of Carry-le-Rouet, France after suffering from breast cancer. But before she lived in France, she lived in the United States. Born and raised in Tryon, North Carolina, a town of only a thousand people, she would become Nina Simone, one of the most renowned artists ever known.
NINA NOW, a senior music project that began in the fall of 2018, has grown to become one of the many musical facets of Destiny Stone’s artistry. It combines the timeless music of Nina Simone, the NINA, and the soulful songs of Destiny, the NOW. At first glance, it may be perceived as a project aimed at recreating the voice, image, and persona of Nina Simone. But Nina Simone cannot be brought back to life nor can anyone fully capture her entire being. If one would try, she would fail miserably. NINA NOW, however, is on a mission to keep Nina Simone’s name ringing. It is about embodying the entirety of being a woman, artist, and activist. It is about no fear and balancing the art of being fragile. With an unique interpretation, Destiny Stone has taken the essence and spirit of Nina Simone and combined it with her own musical talents.
NINA NOW has been performed for several different audiences including:
- Tryon Fine Arts Center Tryon, NC *the birthplace of Nina Simone*
- Tennessee Women’s Theater Project Women Work Festival Nashville, TN
- First Congregational Church Theater South Memphis, TN
- Piedmont Club Black History Program Spartanburg, NC
“What a powerful tribute to Nina Simone. [Destiny’s] voice and passion embodied the spirit of using our platform to bring consciousness.”
